The Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), Cindy McCain, has stated that the only way to combat famine in Sudan is by stopping the ongoing fighting. In a statement on Friday, she emphasized that the continued conflict exacerbates the suffering of millions and makes it extremely difficult to deliver humanitarian aid.
Sudan Rejects Famine Report
In response, the Sudanese government has categorically rejected a recent report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), which described the situation in Sudan as a famine. The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement dismissing the report as lacking accurate standards and relying on unverified estimates. The government further accused international bodies of politicizing food security issues to serve “hidden agendas.”

Questioning the Report’s Credibility
During a press conference in Port Sudan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin, read a government statement rejecting any attempts to exploit humanitarian conditions for political gain. He reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to cooperating with international organizations that uphold transparency and respect national sovereignty.
The statement also criticized the report for using outdated information, pointing out that no new field data had been collected since 2022 due to the ongoing conflict. Instead, the report relied on remote communication and secondary sources, raising concerns about its reliability.
Signs of Improvement in Some Areas
The Sudanese government highlighted several positive developments that were overlooked in international assessments, including the restoration of stability in some regions, improved access to humanitarian aid, and efforts to enhance food security through increased food reserves and market price stabilization.
The Need for a Lasting Solution
With the humanitarian crisis worsening, international aid organizations continue to stress that a ceasefire is the most crucial step toward alleviating suffering. Ending the conflict would enable the delivery of essential aid, facilitate economic recovery, and create sustainable food security solutions for the population facing dire conditions.
