As the conflict in Sudan rages on between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the United Nations continues to intensify its efforts to support peace and bring an end to the war. The violence, which began in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths and displaced millions, making Sudan one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

International Calls for Ceasefire and Civilian Protection

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, stressing the urgent need to halt the flow of weapons into the conflict. “The flow of arms is fueling destruction and bloodshed among civilians,” he stated.

In a significant step, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2724 in March 2024, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities during the month of Ramadan and urging all parties to pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue.

UN Special Envoy Leading Mediation Efforts

UN Special Envoy to Sudan, Lakhdar Brahimi, has been actively engaging with both parties in an effort to bridge divides and encourage political negotiations. He emphasized that any solution must respect Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Brahimi also highlighted the importance of implementing the Jeddah Declaration, which aims to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid access.

Warnings of a Worsening Humanitarian Disaster

The United Nations has warned that the ongoing conflict could deepen the humanitarian catastrophe. Over 25 million people are now facing food insecurity, with famine declared in several areas, particularly in Darfur. More than 13 million people have been displaced, while essential services such as healthcare and education have collapsed in many regions.

Calls for Unified International Action

The UN has appealed for increased international financial and humanitarian support for Sudan, noting that only 10% of the required funding has been secured. It also urged foreign actors to refrain from interventions that could exacerbate the conflict, and instead, focus on supporting peace and stability.

The United Nations reaffirms its commitment to working with all stakeholders to achieve a peaceful resolution in Sudan, and calls for urgent international efforts to end the violence, protect civilians, and deliver lifesaving assistance to those affected.
