United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning about the escalating humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan, stating that the country is “tearing apart before our eyes” and has become the epicenter of “the world’s largest displacement and famine crisis.”
Speaking on Sunday, Guterres urged the international community to unite in halting the flow of weapons and financial support fueling the ongoing bloodshed in Sudan. He emphasized the worsening humanitarian conditions and the urgent need for decisive global action to end the suffering of millions.
In a post on the social media platform X, the UN chief reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, stressing that the dire situation in Sudan requires swift intervention to prevent further devastation.

International Calls for Action
Guterres’ remarks followed his participation in the African Union Summit on Saturday, where he highlighted the major challenges facing the continent. He addressed the crises in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as broader global concerns such as climate change and artificial intelligence.
During his speech, the Secretary-General underscored the need for sustained international engagement in Africa, emphasizing that the continent continues to bear the consequences of “two profound and interconnected injustices”—the lasting impact of colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade.
The World’s Worst Humanitarian Crisis
According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Sudan has become the largest source of refugees and asylum seekers in the region, with Egypt alone hosting approximately 900,000 Sudanese refugees.
The African Union has also described the conflict in Sudan as “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis,” stressing the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to address the escalating emergency.
As the crisis deepens, global attention is turning to diplomatic initiatives aimed at securing a political resolution, ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need, and preventing further deterioration of the situation in Sudan.
