The United Nations Security Council is set to hold an open briefing today, followed by closed-door consultations, to discuss the escalating crisis in Sudan.

During the briefing, Edem Wosornu, Director of Operations and Advocacy at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), will provide an update on the deteriorating humanitarian situation. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, will deliver a separate briefing during the closed consultations, focusing on diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and restore stability.

This session comes as fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces continues to escalate, leading to a worsening humanitarian crisis and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians. The Security Council had previously adopted a resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and emphasizing the need to facilitate humanitarian aid to affected areas.

During the closed consultations, Council members are expected to explore ways to strengthen international efforts to broker a ceasefire and support regional and global mediation initiatives aimed at achieving a lasting peace in Sudan. Discussions will also include potential measures to enhance civilian protection and ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance.

The United Nations has repeatedly warned of the deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan, urging all parties to respect international humanitarian law and allow aid organizations to operate freely. The international community continues to push for a political resolution to the conflict in hopes of restoring stability and preventing further suffering.
