Today, the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, is hosting a humanitarian conference aimed at supporting the Sudanese people. Organized by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in collaboration with its African partners, the conference seeks to enhance humanitarian efforts and coordinate aid for Sudan, which is currently facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.

The UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimy, reaffirmed her country’s commitment to providing humanitarian support to Sudan, emphasizing the urgent need to ensure aid reaches those in need amid the ongoing crisis. She highlighted the UAE’s extensive mobilization of financial and logistical resources to support relief efforts, stressing that effective coordination between governments and international organizations remains crucial for delivering assistance efficiently.

The UAE’s Role in Humanitarian Aid to Sudan

Since the onset of the Sudanese crisis, the UAE has played a key role in humanitarian relief efforts. In April 2024, during the International Humanitarian Conference on Sudan in Paris, the UAE pledged $100 million in humanitarian aid for Sudan and neighboring countries.

By June 2024, the UAE had already allocated *70% of this pledge—$70 million—*to UN humanitarian agencies and relief organizations, reinforcing its commitment to Sudan’s humanitarian needs. (UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

Additionally, within just 24 hours in June 2024, the UAE signed three agreements with UN agencies to provide further humanitarian assistance to Sudan, demonstrating its proactive approach in addressing the crisis.

A Critical Moment for Sudan

This conference comes at a pivotal time, as Sudan continues to face severe humanitarian challenges that require urgent international and regional intervention. With millions affected by the ongoing conflict, the conference is expected to yield new initiatives and additional commitments to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.

As the situation in Sudan worsens, global humanitarian efforts—such as this UAE-led initiative—are crucial in ensuring that aid reaches those most in need and that the international community remains engaged in supporting Sudan’s stability and recovery.
