Amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, met with the Secretary-General of “Doctors Without Borders” (Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF) to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and coordinate humanitarian efforts in Sudan.

The meeting aligns with the UAE’s commitment to supporting the Sudanese people and providing necessary humanitarian aid to alleviate their suffering.
Commitment to International Humanitarian Efforts
During the meeting, Ambassador Abushahab emphasized the need to strengthen international efforts to address Sudan’s deteriorating humanitarian situation. He highlighted the importance of collaborating with international organizations like MSF to ensure aid reaches those in need. He also reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to supporting Sudan during this crisis.
For his part, the Secretary-General of MSF expressed appreciation for the UAE’s humanitarian role in assisting those affected by crises. He stressed the importance of joint coordination to ensure an effective humanitarian response in Sudan.
Challenges Facing Humanitarian Work in Sudan
MSF recently suspended its operations in a major hospital in southern Khartoum due to repeated attacks, cutting off another lifeline for those remaining in the Sudanese capital. The organization has described the situation in Sudan as “one of the worst crises the world has seen in decades.”
In response, the UAE called on the international community to intensify efforts to address Sudan’s humanitarian crisis. The country emphasized the need to ensure the safe and sustainable delivery of aid, in line with international humanitarian law.
UAE’s Additional Humanitarian Support
During a high-level humanitarian conference for the Sudanese people in Addis Ababa, the UAE announced an additional $200 million in humanitarian aid. This initiative reflects the country’s deep-rooted humanitarian values and its steadfast support for Sudan’s people during the ongoing crisis.
African Union officials have described Sudan’s civil war as “the worst humanitarian crisis in the world,” warning that hundreds of thousands of children are suffering from malnutrition. Meanwhile, the United Nations has warned that escalating armed violence is exacerbating the humanitarian situation, putting tens of thousands of lives at risk.
The Urgent Need for International Cooperation
These developments highlight the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation and coordinated humanitarian efforts to ease the suffering of the Sudanese people. Ensuring swift and effective aid delivery remains a critical priority to prevent further deterioration of the crisis.
