The President of the Sudanese Journalists’ Syndicate, Abdel Monim Abu Idris, has announced his resignation from his position.
His resignation comes at a critical time for the Sudanese media sector, which has been severely impacted by the ongoing war. The conflict has led to the destruction of numerous media institutions, the suspension of print newspapers for the first time in over 120 years, and left nearly 90% of media professionals without a stable income.

Elected in August 2022, Abu Idris was the first journalist to hold the position in 33 years. During his tenure, he worked to strengthen the syndicate, advocate for press freedoms, and protect the rights of journalists amid increasing political and security challenges.
While the reasons for his resignation remain unclear, his departure raises questions about the future of the syndicate and the broader challenges facing journalism in Sudan.
