Rapid Support Forces Avenge December Revolution Martyrs by Assassinating Major General Bahar Ahmed Bahar

Major General Bahar Ahmed Bahar, the Sudanese army’s operations commander in Khartoum, was killed along with dozens of senior military officers when a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) strike brought down an Antonov aircraft in Omdurman on Tuesday evening.

Before the outbreak of war between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces on April 15, 2023, Major General Bahar served as the commander of the Central Military Region in Khartoum. He was also among the officers who participated in the military coup against Sudan’s transitional government.

Major General Bahar played a leading role in the violent dispersal of the sit-in at the army headquarters during the December Revolution, acting on direct orders from General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. As the commander of the 7th Infantry Division, stationed near the army headquarters, Bahar was regarded as the chief architect of the massacre that led to the deaths of hundreds of protesters.

Despite widespread calls for justice, Burhan refused to hand Bahar over to the investigation committee led by lawyer Nabil Adib. This was in contrast to the military’s willingness to turn over RSF Deputy Commander Abdel Rahim Hamdan Dagalo and other RSF officers accused of participating in the massacre. Notably, Burhan also shielded army officers implicated in the attack, including Major General Sadiq Said, the son-in-law of former Defense Minister Awad Ibn Auf.

In addition to his role in the sit-in massacre, Bahar was accused of orchestrating another mass killing in the Al-Izba neighborhood of Khartoum Bahri in recent days, where hundreds of unarmed civilians were reportedly killed under his direct orders.
