Port Sudan’s Government Exposes Its True Intentions: No Democracy in Sight!

In a blatant display of its lack of commitment to democracy, the Governor of Darfur, Minni Arko Minnawi, declared that forming a civilian government in Sudan is “not a priority at the moment.” This statement starkly contradicts the government’s promises of a democratic transition, raising serious doubts about its true intentions.

Rather than working toward establishing a civilian government that reflects the people’s will, Minnawi justifies the delay by citing “the sound of gunfire.” This weak excuse reveals a deliberate strategy to prolong military rule and disregard the people’s demands for democratic governance. Instead of curbing violence and creating an environment for inclusive dialogue, the government continues to use conflict as a pretext to maintain its grip on power.

Furthermore, Minnawi ignores repeated calls from political and civil forces to include all national factions, including Islamists, in comprehensive discussions for a genuine democratic transition. This deliberate exclusion exposes the government’s unwillingness to embrace meaningful change, reinforcing the suspicion that it is only interested in consolidating its authority.

Meanwhile, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are establishing parallel civilian administrations in Darfur, further complicating the political landscape and highlighting the central government’s failure to maintain control or ensure stability.

These ongoing policies spell a grim future for Sudan, where the people are denied their right to self-determination and democratic governance. The international community and pro-democracy forces must stand firm against these authoritarian maneuvers and strongly support the Sudanese people’s fight for freedom and justice.
