The Sudan Doctors Network has reported 83 deaths and 1,197 cases of cholera in White Nile State, raising alarm over the worsening health crisis in the region. According to a statement released today (Saturday), 259 patients have recovered and been discharged from Kosti Hospital after receiving treatment.

Escalating Health Emergency

The network warned that White Nile State is facing a severe health disaster due to the rapid spread of the disease, highlighting a critical shortage of hospital beds and medical facilities as cases continue to rise. It urged health authorities to open additional treatment centers to accommodate the growing number of patients, calling for urgent action to contain the outbreak.

Calls for Immediate Intervention

The statement emphasized the need to intensify awareness campaigns, disinfect markets, and prohibit the distribution of drinking water through traditional methods. Additionally, it called for the distribution of chlorine to areas lacking proper water infrastructure to curb the spread of the disease.

Sudan Faces the World’s Worst Humanitarian Crisis

The cholera outbreak comes as Sudan’s war enters its 21st month, leading to the death of nearly 150,000 people and the displacement of 11 million others. The United Nations and humanitarian organizations have described the situation as one of the largest displacement crises in the world. With the ongoing conflict, the humanitarian catastrophe continues to worsen, making it even more challenging to contain disease outbreaks amid the collapse of the healthcare system.
