The Chairperson of the African Union’s High-Level Committee on Sudan, Mohamed Ben Chambas, has stated that the ongoing armed conflict in Sudan has severely worsened the humanitarian situation, disrupting the delivery of aid and exacerbating food shortages and hunger among civilians. He described the crisis as “the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.”

In a post shared by the African Union on X, Ben Chambas highlighted the particularly dire conditions faced by children, the elderly, and women due to widespread violations and the collapse of healthcare services.

He also noted that foreign interference has prolonged the conflict, hindering the implementation of the African Union’s roadmap for ending military confrontations across the continent.

“A military solution is not the right approach,” he said. “Political dialogue among Sudanese stakeholders is the only viable path to ending the war and restoring security and stability.”

Ben Chambas emphasized that the African Union’s efforts to address the Sudanese crisis are anchored in a locally driven solution based on dialogue, inclusivity, reconciliation, neutrality of mediators, and transparency.

He stressed the need for greater coordination among all stakeholders, pointing out that effective collaboration between IGAD and the African Union serves as a model for best practices in conflict resolution.

Reaffirming the African Union’s commitment to supporting a comprehensive political settlement, Ben Chambas urged all Sudanese parties to engage in negotiations, warning that military escalation would only deepen the suffering of the Sudanese people.
